It’s difficult to comprehend the level of cruelty some animals endure, especially dogs that depend entirely on human kindness for survival. One heartbreaking case involved Buddy, a gentle and trusting dog who suffered a devastating attack that left him severely burned. In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society reported that Buddy, described as a “happy and carefree dog” who was never aggressive or threatening, was set on fire and later found with his face badly charred and an extension cord wrapped around his neck. The cruelty of the act shocked the local community, especially after reports suggested a child under the age of 12 had confessed, meaning no criminal charges could be filed. Buddy was immediately placed under the care of the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi and treated by specialists at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where his long and painful recovery journey began.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Buddy showed extraordinary resilience from the very start. Veterinary staff worked tirelessly to manage his pain, change bandages, and perform skin grafts while monitoring his fragile condition. As associate professor Dr. Elizabeth Swanson explained, his recovery represented “the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed,” yet Buddy continued to improve step by step. Over time, his condition stabilized, and remarkably, his eyesight was preserved. As weeks turned into months, his progress became more visible: he became more playful, responded to care, and even began learning basic commands again. Eventually, a major milestone arrived when his bandages were removed without heavy sedation, revealing that he could still see. Today, Buddy continues healing, though he requires lifelong care such as eye drops and protection from sunlight.
