This ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Heartthrob Left Fame Behind Years Ago — See His Life Today in Photos

In the mid-1990s, Jamie Walters lived in a kind of fame that followed him everywhere. As Ray Pruit on Beverly Hills, 90210, the dark-haired musician became a household name, while his real-life music career was climbing at the same time. Fans screamed at mall appearances, tabloids tracked his relationships, and strangers approached him in grocery stores with opinions about a character he played on television. That character, however, became the turning point no one expected. When Ray’s storyline shifted into domestic abuse, viewers stopped separating actor from role. Walters later recalled the shock of reading the script and realizing it could change everything, but even he didn’t anticipate how far the backlash would go—hate mail, public confrontations, and people scolding him in everyday life for something scripted. By the end of his run, Ray Pruit was written off, and the teen idol image that once filled magazines began to fade.

Behind the scenes, Walters was also navigating a turbulent personal life. His engagement to Drew Barrymore, which began in the early 1990s after they met through a shared agent, played out under intense public attention. The relationship moved quickly, even becoming engagement, and he later admitted he had her name tattooed on his back—something he would eventually alter after their split. While both careers continued in different directions, Walters gradually stepped away from the chaos of Hollywood expectations. Instead of chasing another hit single or television role, he made an unexpected choice in his late twenties: applying to become a firefighter in Los Angeles. The process took years of exams, training, and setbacks, but in 2003 he entered the fire academy. It marked a quiet exit from fame and the beginning of a life built not on recognition, but on stability, service, and distance from the character that once defined him.
