12-year-old takes her life and leaves soul-crushing note behind

The loss of a child is one of the deepest pains a family can experience, and the story of Lindsey Mae Swan has left a heartbreaking reminder of how important it is to notice when someone is struggling. The 12-year-old from Huntsville, Alabama, was remembered by her loved ones as “Sweet Pea” and “Stitch,” a bright and caring girl who always defended others. Her family says Lindsey was the type of person who stood up for people who were afraid to speak and protected her friends and siblings with incredible courage. She was an active student at Mountain Gap Middle School, participated in choir, enjoyed math and science programs, acted in children’s theater, and loved activities like volleyball, dancing, hiking, and caring for animals. Behind her smile, however, Lindsey carried deep pain. After losing her father, Joseph Laughery, four years earlier, her family said she struggled with grief. Her mother also shared that bullying at school made things even harder, especially when other students used her father’s death to hurt her.

After Lindsey’s death on February 17, 2026, her family chose to share her story not only to remember her but to encourage others to speak up. In her final journal entry, Lindsey left a powerful message asking people to talk to someone who may be struggling, even if they appear happy on the outside. Her parents hope those words will help another child feel seen and supported. They also emphasized that conversations about mental health and suicide are necessary and can save lives. Lindsey’s story reminds families, schools, and communities that warning signs should never be ignored and that kindness can make a difference.
