Former President Barack Obama recently shared a lighthearted but honest update about his health, aging, and staying active during an interview with his wife, Michelle Obama. The couple spoke with People magazine around the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, where they discussed fitness, lifestyle, and how they approach getting older. At 64, Obama said he still enjoys basketball but admitted that his days of aggressively playing full-court games are mostly over. While the sport remains one of his favorite activities, he explained that he wants to protect his knees and Achilles tendons rather than risk an injury that could leave him dealing with a long recovery. “I am not running up and down that court because I want to protect my knees and my Achilles,” Obama joked, adding that he would rather avoid ending up in a medical boot. He said movements that involve quick side-to-side changes are especially concerning, but he is still willing to participate in lighter activities like playing “Horse” or taking part in shooting contests.
The former president also opened up about his appearance and joked that Michelle has him “beat” when it comes to looking good. Sitting beside his wife, Obama smiled and said, “I don’t look as good as her,” showing his usual sense of humor and humility. Michelle quickly disagreed, telling him that he still looks great and joking that the difference comes from his decision not to dye his hair. Obama responded that keeping up with hair coloring would simply be too much work. Their playful exchange highlighted the couple’s familiar chemistry while also showing a realistic approach to aging. Rather than chasing youth, Obama emphasized staying healthy, remaining active, and making smart choices to enjoy life while protecting his body.
